What we do not collect
No accounts, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising. We never store your exact position.
What happens when you run a check
The point you pick and the date are sent to our server to calculate the result. The server looks up weather for that point from Open-Meteo, and compares it with bird records. For anonymous statistics, such as how many pilots were warned today, we save the time, the result, and the point rounded to a grid cell of about 1 km. Nothing links it to you.
When the page shows a written explanation, the result (the verdict, risk score and reasons, but not your coordinates) is sent to Google Gemini to write one sentence.
Spoken alerts send the alert sentence to Fish Audio to turn it into speech. Sentences are cached on our server so the same sentence is not sent twice.
Map tiles
The map images are loaded from Mapbox (or OpenStreetMap as a backup), so those services see which map area your browser is showing, like any online map. When you search for a place, what you type and the area you are looking at are sent to Mapbox and to Photon (a place search run by komoot on OpenStreetMap data) to find matches.
Stored on your device
Your browser keeps a copy of recent results so the app keeps working on a slow connection. You can clear it by clearing this site's data in your browser.
The controller device
The KnowFlyZone device sends its temperature and light readings to our server every 10 seconds. The readings are kept in a database (Tiger Data) so the app can show a recent history. They contain no location.
Protecting birds
Exact nest and sighting locations never leave our server. The map only shows zones blurred to a grid of about 1 km, so the app cannot be used to find nests.
